In our research on organizations that offer ideas and support for activities that will reduce our contribution to global warming, we were pleased to see that much is already being done. You may not find everything you are looking for here, but these links will take you to organizations that will give you easy to read materials on global warming, offer do-able recommendations for minimizing our personal and institutional production of global warming gases, and suggest how your family and community can take action. And remember - while we face a problem of global proportions, every positive action, done at every level of society, has an impact that will eventually turn the tide!
General Information
- The UCS site provides comprehensive information on global warming and climate change. It's a good place to start if you are new to the issue and is also a great source of information for those who are looking for thoroughly researched information on climate change and its impacts.
For Teachers

Global Systems Science, for grades 9-12, focuses on science-related societal issues. 12 books, teacher guides, and software can support a 1 year integrated science course or supplement existing biology, physics, chemistry, Earth science, or environmental science.
- GLEE is an energy reduction and food sustainability curriculum for 4th and 5th grade students developed at Stanford University with Girls Scouts of Northern California. They are now offering a free online course to learn how to deliver this proven curriculum.
- EPA's Global Warming Site contains a wealth of materials that educators and outreach professionals can use in presentations and classroom activities on climate change science, potential impacts, and mitigation options.
- Solar Schoolhouse Workshops (San Francisco Bay Area)
- Promotes energy awareness, renewable energy and resource conservation through educational and community service program.
For People, Cities and Businesses
- Profitable market-based measures that everyone can use to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- The number 350 means climate safety: to preserve a livable planet, scientists tell us we must reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere from its current level of 400 parts per million to below 350 ppm.
- We believe that a global grassroots movement can hold our leaders accountable to the realities of science and the principles of justice. That movement is rising from the bottom up all over the world, and is uniting to create the solutions that will ensure a better future for all.
For Faith-Based Organizations
- The National Religious Partnership for the Environment is an association of independent faith groups across a broad spectrum: the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, the National Council of Churches U.S.A., the Coalition on the Environment and Jewish Life, and the Evangelical Environmental Network.
- Each partner - in common biblical faith but drawing upon its distinctive traditions - is undertaking scholarship, leadership training, congregational and agency initiative, and public policy education in service to environmental sustainability and justice. Together, they seek to offer resources of religious life and moral vision to a universal effort to protect humankind's common home and well-being on Earth.
- COEJL seeks to expand the contemporary understanding of such Jewish values as tikkun olam (repairing the world) and tzedek (justice) to include the protection of both people and other species from environmental degradation. COEJL seeks to extend such traditions as social action and g’milut hasadim (performing deeds of loving kindness) to environmental action and advocacy. And shalom (peace or wholeness), which is at the very core of Jewish aspirations, is in its full sense harmony in all creation.

Green Muslims serve as a source in the Muslim community for spiritually-inspired environmental education, action, and reflection. Green Muslims engage locally while serving as a national resource.
The Vision of Green Muslims is to see Muslims living in the environmental spirit of Islam, striving towards connection with nature and environmental stewardship.
Climate Action Planning
If your town, city, or county is looking for help in determining how to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, here are several resources that will provide technical assistance, training, publications, and information on grants to help offset the costs of introducing more environmentally friendly city operations.

- ICLEI is the place to start. It engages local governments in developing and implementing policies and programs to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to global warming. These activities also save money, improve local air quality, and increase the livability of communities. To date (February 2012), over 600 local governments are taking actions to reach their greenhouse gas emission reduction goals through ICLEI-US Cities for Climate Protection Campaign.
- A non-profit organization working to build livable communities - funding opportunities and other resources. Primarily directed at cities in California.
- Many cities and local governments in the country are developing and executing the action plans to lay out a strategy, including specific policy recommendations, that they use or will use to address climate change and reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. EPA has compiled a list of such action plans nation-wide.
- Website providing resources to all Californians in order to reduce their environmental impact and take action to stop climate change. It addresses different needs of local governments, businesses, schools and individuals on customized pages for each audience. It provides cities with a variety of tools and resources to assists their planning effort whether they are just getting started or are already in the advanced stages of climate action planning.
